Como muchos saben, Metallica en sus primeros días fueron Thrash Metal, en su demo No Life 'Til Leather, sus álbumes Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets, ...And Justice For All y su ep de covers Garage Days.

Con el gran éxito que estaban consiguiendo, en la década de los 90 lanzaron su álbum Metallica (Black Album), su sonido cambió al Heavy Metal, logrando así más relevancia durante esa época.

Su sonido cambió radicalmente, esta vez hacia el Hard Rock con sus álbumes Load y Reload.

En su álbum de covers Garage Inc. (sobretodo el disco uno, ya que son grabaciones nuevas), podríamos decir que fueron una fusión de ambos estilos; Heavy Metal y Hard Rock.

En los años 2000, quisieron volver a sus raíces Thrash con su álbum St. Anger, el cual fue un álbum un tanto experimental. Posteriormente con sus álbumes Death Magnetic y Hardwired... To Self-Destruct, ya tuvieron su sonido definido actualmente como Thrash y Heavy Metal.
